Blog 313: Looking Forward and Luckenbach

Sevilleta to Laguna Atacosa NWR

With our time in New Mexico over, we headed south and east. Our first stop was Roswell, then on to San Angelo, then Kerrville, finally arriving at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, our home for the coming winter and where we wintered last year. While we did take the auto tour of the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Roswell, most of our trip was just point to point, except for a day in Hill Country.

LBJ National Historic Park
We visited the Lyndon Baines Johnson State Park and LBJ National Historic Park that adjoins it. We took a short trail with the pups then took the driving tour through the ranch. Picturesque—recommended.

Fredericksburg
Home to dozens of wineries, a few breweries, and a couple distilleries, this classy upscale town is a great place to visit. We stopped at nearby Magnolia Pearl, a store known for unique handmade clothing and adorned with awesome old trucks around the exterior. Here are a couple to drool over.

Luckenbach
Being so close, I had to see Luckenbach, Texas, made famous in the Waylon Jennings song. Lots of artists, cowboys of sorts, and old hippies hanging around. Fun place.

Sisterdale
Our last stop on our Hill Country day trip was Sisterdale. Tiny place, but it had its own winery and a functioning bar. It was pouring rain, but I couldn’t pass up these old gas pumps.
